Finding Clever Ways To Keep Your Guests Happy
by Tom Flack

Invest in your future reservations by looking for opportunities to do one last thing to put a smile on the faces of your guests. If you're really clever, you'll also find ways to use good marketing techniques to enhance their experience as well. Here's some quick ideas to get you started:

Give every new guest a free raffle ticket, but offer additional 50 cent or dollar raffle tickets for an item in your store. Guests saying more than a day can also buy raffle tickets. You'll probably raise more money than the price of the item. Announce the winner thirty minutes before you close the store. Guests will begin gathering to see if they won. Some early birds will visit your store while others will visit after the presentation, and may buy the item they didn't win. Either way. They all had fun and the winner earned bragging rights. They'll also write a good review. This can become a social meet and greet opportunity as well. Give some thought as to whether the raffle includes extended stay or seasonal, or is it primarily a boost for your daily rentals.

Buy Popsicles at a Sam's or direct from your distributer so they are super cheap. The single ones are even better. Announce a free Popsicle giveaway at a certain time (or use our flag tip! 01/05/10). You'll have your guests flocking to the store because everyone likes to get something free and America's loves Popsicles.

You can do the same thing with ice cream, but perhaps hold it for seven o'clock or after supper as a cheap dessert.

Distribute discount coupons for future stays at your park. My favorite is the buy one get one free program. This allows a current customer to bring a guest RV with them on their next visit. It also sets up a next visit which is always nice. This often introduces a second customer to your park.

Start a frequent visitor program that allows a prize or free stay after so many visits. Use a punch card they can keep in their wallet that will remind them to take advantage of the freebie every time they open their wallet. Many folks may return more often than they planned, just so they can take advantage of the program.

Put on your thinking caps, as my teacher used to say, and start thinking of all the promotions you could put to use this year. Don't forget to add them to your marketing folder to refresh your memory in the future.

As our Tipsters read 'Tips For RV Resorts' each week, if the tip applies, they probably store the idea in the back of their brain, or print it out. However, if you forgot the idea or didn't print it out, you can also go online to our website (www.GoGti.com) to Tips/News and Tips Online. On the right hand side in the upper corner, you'll see a blank search box. Above the search box is the list of the categories to choose.

Here's my list of the tools you'll need for a great year:

  1. If you can afford it, buy, lease, or rent a backhoe tractor with a bucket scoop on the front. You can easily dig new ditches for power, water, or sewer, or help the rainwater drain away. The bucket scoop makes it easy to level a site, haul in more gravel, or fix those darn potholes. If you can swap out for a blade, you can keep your road smooth, and if need be, clear the snow on your roads and sites faster.

Sometimes a park has to lock the pool and laundry after hours, but after opening the office the following morning, they can get busy and forget to open the laundry and pool at the scheduled time. It is not much fun to carry a load to the laundry only to find the door locked, or dress a bunch of kids of all ages, grab snacks, suntan oil, and herd the gang to the pool only to find it closed. Perhaps they need to buy something from your store, or update their reservation in the office. Flying a flag when a service is open keeps everybody happy.
